The Apple Macintosh Classic was the first Apple compuer under $1000. It retained many features of previous models, including a 4 MB memory, but was faster and had a floppy disk drive. Extensive education software was developed for it. Dr. Thomas Wehr was chief of the Clinical Psychobiology Branch in the NIMH. He is best known for his research on the effect of light on the secretion of melantonin and sleep. Also, he and Dr. Norman E. Rosenthal identified Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) and developed light therapy to treat it. "This was my first personal computer. Its word-processor program had a great impact on my productivity. Not long after I acquired the computer, I published 5 first-author scientific papers in the American Journal of Psychiatry in one year. I suspect that is a record. The ease of putting words to paper, and most importantly, the ease of revising them, plus the fact that it was no longer necessary to depend on secretaries, was very liberating.
