Description | Ida A. Bengston was the first woman scientist in the Public Health Service. In 1937, she was transferred to Washington, D.C. Her former laboratory in the PHS had become the Division of Infectious Diseases of the National Institute of Health (NIH). Bengtson was awarded the Typhus Medal in 1947, by the American Typhus Commission. Ida A. Bengston died in 1952, at the age of 71. |
