History Dr. Ira Levin worked at the NIH for 48 years as both a talented scientist and administrator. He held several management positions in NIDDK's Division of Intramural Research while still leading the molecular biophysics section of the Laboratory of Chemical Physics. In 2009, he became NIDDK's scientific director and was appreciated for distribuing resources fairly. As a scientist, he is best known for his development of new spectroscopic methods and their applications such as infrared imaging, using infrared imaging and Raman measurements to characterize the structure of lipid bilayer systems, and applying vibrational spectroscopic imaging to medical diagnostics. He published 235 articles, 135 meeting abstracts, and received 20 awards, including the Pittsburgh Spectroscopy Award, the top award in that field. He retired from NIH in 2011.
