Catalog Number 13.0013.001
Title Hewlett Packard (HP) 41C Programmable Calculator
History This Hewlett Packard (HP) 41C Programmable Calculator belonged to Dr. Kenneth J. Rothman. Rothman worked at the National Cancer Institute when he wrote with Dr. John D. Boice, Jr. the book "Epidemiologic Analysis with a Prgrammable Calculator" in 1979. In later editions, the book referred to this calculator. See 13.0012.001 for more information about the book.

This calculator was designed to add functions and ease of use by adding an Alpha key to enable the keyboard to go between the alpha and normal keyboard modes. Functions could also be typed in using the "User" key and assigned to a specific key. The 41C also increased the memory available and could be expanded with memory modules. The card reader had a translator for programs written for the HP67. Hewlett Packard made the 41C from 1979-1985.

Rothman was on the faculty at Harvard Unversity when he came to the National Cancer Institute (NCI) as a Visiting Fellow under Dr. Joseph Fraumeni. His co-author Dr. John Boice, Jr., was a graduate student at Harvard whom Rothman recruited to come to NCI. After leaving NCI, Rothman has had a distinguished career, researching such varied topics as the environmental risks for cancer (including cell phone use), vitamin A, heart disease, birth defects, and the ethical issues involved in epidemiology. Among other achievements and awards, he is a founding editor of the journal "Epidemiology" and has written two important textbooks on the topic.
