History | Dr. Michael Potter won the Lasker Award for medical research for his work on understanding tumors and the immune system. He worked for over 50 years at the National Cancer Institute (NCI). He studied how tumors in plasma cells, called plasmacytomas, are produced by injecting mineral oil into mice and seeing what antibodies were stimulated. He developed many strains of mouse plasma cells using wild mice. He widely shared these strains and one of them was used by Cesar Milstein and Georges Kohler to develop monoclonal antibodies--antibodies of a single type that can be replicated in unlimited quantities for research. They won the Nobel Prize. |
